Whο is the Transmission System Operator (TSO) in Cyprus?
The Transmission System Operator is an independent legal entity of the Republic of Cyprus, established in 2004 after the decision of the Cyprus Government to harmonise with the European Directive concerning common rules for the internal electricity market. The Budget of the TSO is approved by the House of Representatives.

What are the responsibilities of the Transmission System Operator?
The basic responsibilities of the TSO is the operation of the Electrical Energy Transmission System and the objective management of the electricity market in the competitive environment, supporting and promoting at the same time the generation of electricity from renewable energy sources. The TSO coordinates actions for maintaining continuity of supply to consumers for an efficient, coordinated, safe, reliable, and economically viable Transmission System. In addition, the TSO prepares a ten year plan, which ensures the long-term development of the Transmission System. -
What is the Electrical Transmission System?
According to the Law regulating the Electricity Market of 2003, the term ‘transmission system” means the system comprising the high voltage electric lines and substations, which are used for the transmission of electricity from one power station to a substation, or to another power station, or between substations and includes any equipment and apparatus.
The Transmission System is operated by the TSO and owned by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus.

What is the Electrical Distribution System?
According to the Law regulating the Electricity Market of 2003, the term ”distribution system” means the electrical distribution network operated at medium and low voltage. This network does not include any equipment operated at a voltage equal or greater than 66.000 Volts.
The owner and operator of the Distribution System is the Electricity Authority of Cyprus.

What is the relationship between the Transmission System Operator (TSO) and the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC)?
According to the Law regulating the Electricity Market of 2003, TSO is the οperator of the Transmission System, which is owned by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus. The TSO is an independent in legal terms Entity. The Director of the TSO is appointed by the Council of Ministers, whilst the TSO staff is transferred from the Electricity Authority of Cyprus.

What is the relationship between the TSO and the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism?
The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism is the Ministry responsible for managing issues relative to the Energy Sector. Thus, the TSO and all organisations and authorities active in the energy sector, are directly related to the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism.
Although the TSO is an independent entity in legal terms and does not come under the jurisdiction of the Ministry, the TSO and all electricity market participants closely co-operate and follow the directions and decrees of the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, issued from time to time.
